Meet Shelby, a 2021 HOBY Western Ontario alum who’s entering her fourth year in the Concurrent Education program at Brock University. This past May, she had the life-changing opportunity to study abroad in Guatemala with Brock’s Faculty of Education.

“As a future teacher, I believed this experience would expand my global perspective and help me reflect on my life and privilege in Canada—and it did just that,” says Shelby. “I spent 14 days outside my comfort zone, experiencing life in Antigua, Santiago, and Nebaj.”

During her time in Guatemala, Shelby visited local homes and schools, building personal connections with community members. She asked questions, listened to stories, and learned about the country's history, resilience, and educational system. Her conversations with Guatemalan educators offered eye-opening comparisons to the Ontario school system.

“The difference in priorities and way of life is something I’ll never forget,” she shares. “People were joyful, kind, and eager to share. Children were passionate about learning and making a difference.”

What stood out most to Shelby was the unwavering determination of the community to create a better future for their youth. She left Guatemala feeling empowered, honoured, and deeply grateful.

“This trip wasn’t about sightseeing or tourism—it was about connection, learning, and immersion. The people I met made me feel seen, respected, and welcomed.”

One request stuck with her: community members asked that she and her classmates return home and share their stories with the world.

“It made me reflect on how much we take for granted—clean water, fresh food, shelter,” says Shelby. “I’ll carry with me the lessons of gratitude, cultural respect, resilience, and the drive to make a difference. Guatemala changed my life.”
