Hey HOBY!

The volunteers and ambassadors had an OUTSTANDING time at the 2025 Grey-Bruce CLeW!

This year—our return to in-person CLeWs in Grey-Bruce —was themed HOBY HERO, focusing on passion! With 15 grade ten students attending, and 9 wonderful volunteers, the 1-day workshop was a huge success!

Youth from across Grey-Bruce county had the opportunity to participate in leadership games and exercises, listen to a fantastic presentation about passion from HOBY Alumnus Maddison Darnell, and complete two L4S activities. Our ambassadors were able to complete over 30 menstrual care packages to donate to our local women’s house, as well as cards and bouquets to deliver to the Owen Sound Hospice. Grade ten students and volunteers also generously donated many items to the food drive! The CLeW staff are so incredibly proud of all the community service work that was completed. Great work!

During the event, ambassadors took part in exciting leadership games that had everyone working together and having fun. The staff were very impressed with the teamwork that was displayed between the ambassadors as they competed in two groups to get the fastest time. In the end, it came to a tie because both teams were just too good!

Junior staff had the opportunity to lead the ambassadors through table topics, which gave our students a chance to voice their thoughts and feelings about current world events. The activity went off without a hitch, and the positive and supportive energy in the room was incredible. Great job to the JGL’s for facilitating such an important activity, and to the ambassadors for navigating such heavy topics with great respect. It is part of the HOBY spirit to create a safe environment to educate, listen, and grow into good leaders, and that’s space was definitely created at our event!

Ambassadors and J-staff alike took some time to do some personal reflection on their values and skills as they learned about their HOBY leadership style! Hawks, otters, beavers, and yaks joined together to discuss their strengths, weaknesses, and Hoby Heroes together while answering some thought-provoking questions about their individual styles of leadership. Ambassadors talked about their passions and what inspires them to be leaders in their communities. It was exciting to hear such variety in stories, and to watch as ambassadors inspired their peers.

The weather was perfect for outdoor activities, so everyone headed outside for a final hurrah before it was time to go. Ambassadors participated in games of huckle-buckle, ride that pony, and squirt! Everyone had a great time getting moving and bonding with each other! As the day came to a close, CLeW attendees traded beads with one another as they shared the things they had learned together throughout the day, as well as kind sentiments.

Thank you to everyone for attending and making this CLeW a huge success! Our Grey-Bruce CLeW team is incredible thankful to have the Arran-Elderslie Community Centre donated for use this summer - a HUGE thank you to the Arran-Elderslie City Council for their support! And thank you to the volunteers, sponsors, and companies who this event would not have been possible without. Looking forward to seeing you next year!

The Grey-Bruce CLeW Team
